đ Itâs Not a Coin Pocket â Itâs a Watch Pocket
Originally, that small pocket was designed to hold a pocket watch.
So Leviâs designed jeans with a fifth pocket â specifically to protect pocket watches from damage while working in harsh conditions.
In the 1890 Leviâs catalog, it was even referred to as a “watch pocket.“
đ°ď¸ Why Is It Still There?
- Tradition â Itâs a nod to denimâs heritage.
- Style â The pocket adds a classic, rugged detail to the jeans’ look.
- Functionality (sort of) â While it may not hold a watch anymore, people use it for coins, guitar picks, rings, lighters, USB drives, or tiny treasures.
đ¤ Fun Fact: Itâs Actually the Fifth Pocket
You may think jeans only have four pockets, but that tiny one is officially considered the fifth. Classic jeans have:
- Two back pockets
- Two front pockets
- One small âwatchâ pocket inside the right front pocket
Thatâs five.
