Is It an Earwig? Identifying the Bug That Bit Your Child

Earwigs are small insects with elongated bodies and pincers (forceps) at the tail end.

Though they look scary, they’re mostly harmless and prefer dark, damp places like gardens or under rocks.

They rarely bite humans, and when they do, the bite is usually mild.

Symptoms of an Earwig Bite in Children

Mild redness and slight swelling around the bite area.

Minor irritation and brief discomfort.

Symptoms usually go away quickly without lasting effects.

Immediate Care After the Bite

Clean the bite area gently with soap and water to prevent infection.

Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and soothe irritation.

Use over-the-counter antihistamines or hydrocortisone cream if itching or redness appears.

Encourage your child not to scratch to avoid worsening irritation.
