When they tied the knot, she was 28 and he was 61.

“I loved him deeply and was devoted to him,” she later reflected.

However, their love came with its own set of expectations.

“He wanted me to leave my acting career, and I did. He wanted to alter my hair, my clothing, my walk, and my writing style. I genuinely wanted to make him happy.”

She attempted to transform into the woman he envisioned, but the more she tried, the more she lost her own identity.

“I would make an effort to close the cupboards more softly… try to drive with both hands on the wheel,” she remembered.

Eventually, she came to understand that no level of change could bridge the gap between them.
