What the Button Actually Does
The small button on a seat belt buckle is primarily a locking or release mechanism. Pressing it allows the belt to disengage from the buckle, enabling passengers to remove the belt when exiting the vehicle. In some modern cars, especially those with adjustable or automatic seat belts, the button may also interact with a pre-tensioning system, which tightens the belt instantly during sudden stops or collisions. This ensures the occupant stays securely in place, reducing the risk of injury.
