Steven Sund Details Earlier National Guard Request

The Steven Sund response to Nancy Pelosi included details about security requests before January 6. Sund said he formally requested National Guard support on January 3, 2021.

According to Sund, the request was denied by the House Sergeant at Arms. Under federal law, he said he could not deploy the Guard without approval.

Sund cited federal statute 2 U.S.C. §1970 as the restriction. That law required authorization before calling in military support.

He also said officials at the Pentagon offered National Guard assistance the same day. However, he said he lacked authority to accept the offer.
