The Legendary Rifle That Wasn’t Historically Accurate
One of the most iconic elements of the show is the rapid-fire opening featuring Lucas and his 1892 Winchester saddle-ring carbine. Even though the rifle didn’t exist during the show’s actual time period, it quickly became a signature feature.
Adding another layer of Hollywood history, the same firearm had been previously used by John Wayne in the classic film Stagecoach (1939).
Unexpected Guest Stars
The series also welcomed numerous guest appearances, including baseball greats Duke Snider and Don Drysdale, who brought their athletic presence to the screen.
Another standout cameo was from Sammy Davis Jr., who portrayed the skilled gunfighter Tip Corey. Davis insisted on performing all his own stunts—including impressive gun twirls and quick draws—earning admiration from the entire cast.
