Parents scrambled to shield their children. Some grabbed blankets, some covered kids with their own bodies, and others dove for shelter inside the house or behind cars on the street. The joyful scene, once full of innocent celebration, became chaotic.
One neighbor, who asked not to be named, said she was just stepping outside when she first heard the gunfire.
“It sounded like it was coming from everywhere at once — like someone set off a machine,” she told reporters. “For a moment we thought it was fireworks… then we saw adults dropping to the ground, kids screaming, and parents trying to shield them. It was terrifying.”
“We had just arrived, and I was holding my niece when the shots started. At first nobody knew what it was. We thought maybe someone was celebrating too hard. But then the looks on people’s faces… we realized this was something very wrong. Everybody just dropped where they were and tried to get to safety.”
There are also reports that some guests and neighbors assisted the injured before medical responders arrived — applying pressure to wounds, using towels as makeshift bandages, and comforting children.
Paramedics arrived to a scene of disorder: terrified children, distraught family members, broken decorations, and multiple victims requiring immediate medical attention.
