Behind her pro fessional triumphs, the singer faced many personal demons, including depression and an eating disorder. She married Don Burton in 1994 and they had three children together, which she credited with helping her heal from past trauma. Later in life, she bravely revealed that she had been abused as a child for several years. This pain was made worse when she had to face her abuser at the funeral of her father in 2011. After her long marriage ended in 2014, she struggled with her mental health and received a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. She was very honest with her fans about her battles with alcohol and the difficulty of maintaining her stability while traveling on world tours.
