Matilda lived in the Val Rendena area of northern Italy, a mountainous region known for its close-knit villages and strong community ties. On Monday morning, she set out as she had on countless other school days, walking toward her bus stop along State Road 239. According to reports from Italian media, a cement truck traveling through the area struck her as she was crossing the road. Despite the rapid response from emergency services, Matilda did not survive.
