It was just past 2:30 a.m. on a quiet July night in 2022 when the sound of tires screeching broke the calm in Moss Point, Mississippi.

A car carrying three teenage girls had accidentally driven off a boat launch and plunged straight into the cold, dark waters of the Pascagoula River.

From the nearby shore, 16-year-old Corion Evans saw the headlights vanish beneath the surface — and before anyone could react, he was already moving. He kicked off his shoes, pulled off his shirt, and dove into the water.
