Even the old church doors seemed to stop creaking.

“Mom.”

“Don’t you Mom me. Not today.” Her voice trembled, but not with weakness. “This is your father’s memorial.

This is not a stage for you.”

“I didn’t come for a stage.”

“Then take it off.”

A few people gasped softly. My hands stayed at my sides. “I’m not taking off my uniform.”
