Durbin opened his remarks by criticizing the Trump Administration’s attempt to persuade a grand jury in Washington, D.C. to indict several Democratic members of Congress — including Senators Mark Kelly (D-AZ) and Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) and Representatives Jason Crow (D-CO), Chris Deluzio (D-PA), Maggie Goodlander (D-NH) and Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA) — on politically motivated grounds.
He called such efforts “frightening,” arguing that no president in history has used the Department of Justice to try to silence members of Congress, and praised the grand jury’s rejection of the indictments as evidence that Americans still value constitutional freedoms.
