Surveillance footage released by the sheriff’s office showed two boys inside the library earlier in the day who then returned later that night, leading investigators to identify them as suspects.

The two boys seen on video were just 12 and 13 years old, ages that make this case unusual because of the level of destruction and the young age of those involved.

Neighbors and residents were shocked that such serious vandalism could occur in a school, a place typically associated with safety, learning, and community gathering.

Officials estimate the cost of repairs and replacement for the destroyed materials and broken fixtures at Friendship Elementary’s library to be at least $50,000, a substantial loss for a public school.

The sheriff’s office initially released photos of the suspects as “persons of interest,” circulating images and video captured by surveillance to gather leads from the public.

Many community members recognized the individuals in the footage, but it was ultimately the boys’ own mothers who provided the identifying information to authorities.
